Expulsion Over Minidress Is Reversed
Geisy Arruda, a 20-year-old tourism student, can return to the classroom after Bandeirante University reversed its decision to expel her; this followed a flood of negative responses to her expulsion in a nation known for tiny bikinis, beaches and Carnaval.
The dean of Bandeirante, a private university in suburban São Paulo, announced the reversal in a statement on Monday.
One of Ms. Arruda’s lawyers, Nehemias Domingos de Melo, said Tuesday that she had not yet been officially notified of the decision to reinstate her. He said he remained cautious about the prospects of her going back to school. “She can only return with some safety guarantees,” he told reporters.
On Oct. 22, students ridiculed and cursed Ms. Arruda for her short pink dress. She was forced to put on a professor’s white coat and was escorted away by police officers amid insults by students.
